"Solheim Cup 2026" was one of the fastest-rising sports searches on Google in the United States this week, and interest spiked in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand too. The finish explained why.

The Result

  • Winner: Team Europe, 15–13.
  • Venue: Bernardus Golf, the Netherlands.
  • Before the singles: the teams were level at 8–8.

How Europe Won It

After two days of foursomes and fourballs left nothing between the sides, the contest came down to Sunday's twelve singles matches — and Europe produced its strongest session of the week.

The clinching point: England's Lottie Woad beat Auston Kim 2&1 to take Europe to the 14.5 points needed to win the Cup outright.

The seal on victory: Spain's Carlota Ciganda defeated Jennifer Kupcho 4&2 to confirm a memorable week for the hosts.

What the Solheim Cup Is

The Solheim Cup is the leading team competition in women's professional golf, played every two years between the best players from Europe and the United States. It follows the match-play format familiar from men's team golf: players compete hole by hole, and each match is worth a point, with halved matches worth half a point each.

With 28 points available, a team needs 14.5 to win outright.

Match Play Terms Explained

  • Foursomes: two players per side share one ball and take alternate shots.
  • Fourballs: each player plays her own ball, and the better score on each hole counts for the pair.
  • Singles: one player against one player, over 18 holes.
  • "2&1": the winner was two holes ahead with only one hole left to play, so the match ended early.
  • Halved: a match that finishes level, earning each side half a point.

Why It Matters

For European golf, a home victory built on a dominant final day is a strong statement about the depth of talent coming through, including younger players such as Woad.

For the sport, a close, dramatic contest followed across several continents is exactly the kind of event that grows audiences for women's golf.

More Golf and Sport

Europe's success extended to the men's game in Ireland, where Shane Lowry won the Irish Open by a record 11 shots. Another team sport also crowned champions this weekend — see the FIBA Women's World Cup final.
