The Golden Lion: Woman Unknown

The festival's top prize for best film went to Woman Unknown, directed by May el-Toukhy of Denmark.

The drama follows a young housemaid whose intimate relationship with a German soldier during the Second World War threatens her future — a story about love, judgement and survival in occupied Europe.

A Speech That Echoed the Jury

In her acceptance speech, el-Toukhy spoke about the lack of female filmmakers. It was a theme raised on the festival's very first day by jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal, giving the win extra resonance.
