¡Viva México! Your Guide to the 2026 Grito in the Zócalo

Mexico City's Zócalo hosts the Grito de Independencia on Tuesday 15 September 2026, with music from 8pm, a free headline concert by Intocable, mariachi and a tribute to José Alfredo Jiménez, and President Claudia Sheinbaum's Grito from the National Palace balcony at around 11pm.

Searches for the Grito line-up and schedule are rising across Mexico as the country prepares for its biggest patriotic celebration.

Schedule for 15 September

From 8:00pm: live music in the Zócalo.
Around 11:00pm: the Grito de Independencia from the central balcony of the Palacio Nacional, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum.
After the Grito: fireworks and a free headline concert by Intocable.

Intocable — the norteño-Tejano band, headlining the free show.
Mariachi performances.
Bands of the Navy and the National Guard.
A tribute to José Alfredo Jiménez, featuring the legendary songwriter's grandson.
Winners of México Canta: Sergio Maya, Carmen María and Galia Siurob.

What the Grito Commemorates

The celebration recalls the call to independence made by the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in the town of Dolores in the early hours of 16 September 1810, which began Mexico's struggle for independence from Spain. Each year, leaders across the country — from the President in the capital to mayors in town squares — re-enact the cry, naming the heroes of independence and ending with "¡Viva México!"

Traditions of the Night

Food: pozole, tostadas, tamales, enchiladas and chiles en nogada.
Decorations: green, white and red flags, streamers and papel picado.
Dress: many people wear traditional clothing or the national colours.
Gatherings: for families who stay home, the "noche mexicana" is a party with friends and neighbours.

Tips if You're Going to the Zócalo

Arrive early — the square fills up hours before the Grito.
Check which Metro stations are open; some near the Zócalo may close for crowd control.
Carry only essentials, keep valuables secure and avoid large bags.
Agree a meeting point with your group and keep phones charged.
Bring water and a light jacket — September evenings can bring rain.
Watch on TV or online if you prefer to avoid the crowds; the Grito is broadcast live.
