India's Nutrition Month Asks Every Community to Own Its Anganwadi

India's ninth Rashtriya Poshan Maah runs from 9 September to 8 October 2026 under the theme 'Hamari Anganwadi, Hamari Jimmedari', focusing on dietary diversity, protein intake, hot cooked meals and community ownership of Anganwadi centres.

"Poshan Abhiyaan 2026" is one of the fastest-rising "2026" searches in India on Google Trends this week. Google Ads data shows "Poshan Maah" reached about 301,000 searches in India during last year's campaign month.

The 2026 Campaign

  • Edition: the ninth Rashtriya Poshan Maah.
  • Dates: 9 September to 8 October 2026.
  • Launch: Varanasi.
  • Theme: "Hamari Anganwadi, Hamari Jimmedari" — "Our Anganwadi, Our Responsibility".

The theme places community ownership of Anganwadi centres — India's village and neighbourhood centres for child care and nutrition — at the heart of the campaign.

Five Focus Areas

  1. Dietary diversity and adequate protein intake.
  2. Fresh, hot cooked meals at Anganwadi centres.
  3. Community ownership through Anganwadi Management Committees and supplementary nutrition menu boards.
  4. Nutrition and early stimulation for childhood development.
  5. Ten years of the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, the maternity benefit programme.

How It Fits the Bigger Programme

Poshan Abhiyaan was launched in 2018 to place nutrition at the centre of India's development agenda. Poshan Maah is run under the wider Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 framework, using a Jan Andolan — people's movement — approach that relies on community mobilisation and behaviour change rather than government action alone.

What Anganwadi Centres Do

Anganwadi centres are the grassroots hubs of India's Integrated Child Development Services scheme, which began in 1975. They typically offer:

  • Supplementary nutrition for young children and pregnant and breastfeeding women.
  • Pre-school education through play-based learning.
  • Immunisation support and health check-ups, working with local health staff.
  • Nutrition and health education for families.

Why the Early Years Matter

Good nutrition in pregnancy and early childhood supports healthy growth and brain development. That is why campaigns like this focus on mothers, infants and young children, and on the local centres families already use.

Simple Ways Families Can Take Part

  • Visit your local Anganwadi and learn what services and meals it offers.
  • Add variety to everyday meals — pulses, vegetables, fruits, milk and eggs where suitable.
  • Join community activities such as recipe demonstrations and growth monitoring days.
  • Ask health workers about maternity benefits if you are expecting a baby.

September is a busy month for Indian families — see Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 timings. Health campaigns elsewhere this month include Australia's R U OK? Day.
