France Opens Its Doors: Heritage Days 2026 Celebrate Two Centuries of Photography
France's European Heritage Days, the Journées européennes du patrimoine, take place on 19 and 20 September 2026, celebrating the heritage of photography on its bicentenary alongside the European theme of heritage at risk. A schools day on 18 September invites pupils to 'Levez les yeux !'.

"Journées du patrimoine 2026" is one of the top searches in France on Google this month as people plan which palaces, ministries, workshops and hidden sites to visit.
Key Dates
- Friday 18 September 2026: a special day for schools, "Levez les yeux !" ("Look up!").
- Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2026: the main Heritage Days weekend, open to everyone.
The Themes
National theme: "Patrimoine de la photographie" — the heritage of photography, marking the bicentenary of the medium. France has a special place in this story: Nicéphore Niépce produced what is generally regarded as the oldest surviving camera photograph in the 1820s.
European theme: "Patrimoine en péril : raviver, résister, réimaginer" — heritage at risk: revive, resist, reimagine. It invites visitors to think about how monuments and traditions threatened by time, climate or neglect can be protected and given new life.
What You Can Visit
During Heritage Days, thousands of sites across France welcome the public, many of them free of charge. Typical openings include:
- Government buildings and ministries usually closed to the public.
- Castles, churches and historic houses.
- Museums and archives, often with special exhibitions.
- Craft workshops, industrial sites and theatres behind the scenes.
- National monuments managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux.
With photography as the 2026 theme, expect exhibitions of historic images, darkroom workshops, photo walks and access to collections that are rarely shown.
How to Plan Your Weekend
- Search the official programme on the Ministry of Culture's Heritage Days website by town or type of site.
- Book ahead where required. Popular sites often need free reservations that go quickly.
- Go early — queues at famous buildings can be long by mid-morning.
- Choose a cluster of nearby sites to avoid spending the day travelling.
- Carry ID, as security checks apply at official buildings.
- Bring your camera where photography is allowed — fitting for this year's theme.
Why Heritage Days Matter
Heritage Days make culture accessible to everyone, regardless of budget. They also build public support for conservation by showing the work of restorers, archivists and volunteers who protect shared history.
