Gold Is Below Its Peak, but Investors Are Piling In at a Record Pace

Gold traded around $4,350 an ounce on 11 September 2026 after setting an all-time high above $5,500 earlier in the year. Global gold ETFs took in $18 billion in August, lifting holdings to a record 4,189 tonnes. What is behind the demand.

Where the Price Is

  • Gold rose to $4,350.36 per troy ounce on 11 September 2026, up 0.76 percent on the day.
  • It traded around $4,331 on 1 September.
  • Earlier in 2026, gold set an all-time high above $5,500.

That leaves the price roughly a fifth below its 2026 peak — a reminder that gold can fall sharply as well as rise.

Record ETF Buying in August

According to the World Gold Council:

  • Global gold ETFs added $18 billion in August — the second-largest monthly inflow on record in value terms.
  • Holdings rose by 121 tonnes to a record 4,189 tonnes.
  • Total assets under management rose 16 percent to $615 billion.
  • European funds posted their largest monthly inflow ever, at $7.9 billion; North American funds added $7.7 billion, their third-largest; Asian funds added $2 billion, led by China.

What Is Driving Demand

The World Gold Council points to three related developments behind August's buying:

Currency concerns, including yen intervention and wider questions about foreign-exchange policy.

Fiscal and government bond market concerns, which push some investors toward assets outside the financial system.

Momentum, as gold rallied and broke above key technical levels, attracting trend-following buyers.

Interest rates matter too: gold pays no interest, so expectations of higher rates can weigh on it — relevant ahead of the Federal Reserve's September meeting.

Ways People Own Gold

Gold ETFs track the price and trade like shares, with an annual fee. The same idea applies to spot Bitcoin ETFs.

Coins and bars mean physical ownership, but come with dealer mark-ups, storage and insurance costs.

Mining shares are companies, not gold — they carry business risks as well as price risk.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Gold is volatile, as the drop from $5,500 shows.
  • It produces no income.
  • Beware "guaranteed" gold schemes and unregulated dealers — see our financial scam red flags.
