A Winter of Swings? What Canada's Long-Range Forecasts Say About 2026–27

The Farmers' Almanac expects a winter of sharp swings and active storms across Canada in 2026–27, with Arctic outbreaks on the Prairies and wet, windy weather on the BC coast, while The Old Farmer's Almanac leans milder. A very strong El Niño could shape the season.

"Canada winter weather predictions 2026 2027" is the fastest-rising "2026" search in Canada on Google Trends this week. Here is what the most-followed long-range outlooks expect.

The Big Picture

The Farmers' Almanac describes a winter of frequent changes, sharp temperature swings and an active storm track, rather than one continuous coast-to-coast deep freeze.

Region by Region (Farmers' Almanac)

British Columbia. A generally wet and windy coast with heavy Pacific rain and occasional thaws — Vancouver and Victoria may see more rain than snow at low elevations. The interior looks much snowier, with heavy mountain snowfall and difficult travel at times.

The Prairies. Potentially some of the season's most dramatic cold outbreaks, with Arctic air, strong winds, blowing snow and possible blizzards. In Alberta, Chinook winds may bring rapid temperature changes.

Great Lakes and Eastern Canada. Frequent snow and icy conditions around the Great Lakes, and an active mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and coastal storms further east.

A Milder Alternative View

The Old Farmer's Almanac generally leans milder, forecasting near- to above-normal temperatures across much of southern Canada, including the southern Prairies, and across Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

The El Niño Factor

The Farmers' Almanac points to a strengthening El Niño as an important influence. In August, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported a greater than 90 percent chance of a very strong El Niño during the Northern Hemisphere autumn and winter.

How Much to Trust Almanacs

Almanac forecasts are long-range outlooks made months in advance, and the two publications disagree on how severe the winter will be. Treat them as a talking point, not a plan. For decisions that matter — travel, farming, events — rely on Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts closer to the time.

Get Ready Anyway

  • Book winter tyre changes early, before the first cold snap.
  • Service your furnace or heat pump and check insulation around doors and windows.
  • Pack a car emergency kit — blanket, scraper, shovel, water and a phone charger.
  • Plan for power outages with flashlights, batteries and basic supplies at home.
