Apple's New Watches Measure Your Heart Sixty Times More Often
The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 keep their $399 and $799 starting prices but add a new health sensing system that checks heart rate every five seconds — 60 times more often than before — and heart rate variability every five minutes. On sale 18 September.

Among the launches at Apple's 9 September event, the new watches focused less on design and more on health measurement.
Prices and Dates
- Apple Watch Series 12: from $399.
- Apple Watch Ultra 4: from $799.
- Both prices are unchanged from the previous generation, despite expectations of a rise.
- Pre-orders opened on 9 September; the watches launch on 18 September.
The New Health Sensing System
Heart rate every five seconds. The upgraded monitor now measures heart rate data every five seconds — a 60-fold increase in frequency over previous models.
Heart rate variability every five minutes. HRV — the natural variation in time between heartbeats — is widely used as a signal of recovery and stress.
A new readiness feature. Apple combines activity, vital signs and sleep data into a readiness indicator designed to help you judge whether to push hard or take it easy.
Accuracy claim. Apple cites a study of more than 1,000 participants that it says found Apple Watch had the most accurate heart rate sensing of leading wearables. Independent testing will show how that holds up.
Why More Frequent Readings Help
Heart rate changes constantly. Measuring more often builds a more complete picture across the day and night, which improves trend-based features such as sleep and recovery tracking. It also gives the watch more data points when spotting unusual patterns.
Keeping It in Perspective
- A smartwatch is a wellness tool, not a replacement for medical care.
- Readiness scores are guides, not instructions — how you feel still matters.
- If your watch flags something unusual, or you have symptoms such as chest pain, contact a medical professional.
Should You Upgrade?
Owners of a watch from the last two generations will find the new sensing most useful if they closely track training and recovery. Owners of much older models gain more across the board.
The wider wearable-health market is booming — see smart ring maker Oura's planned IPO. Apple's other launches: iPhone 18 Pro and AirPods 5.
